  • BPDC students participated in SAE BAJA Tennessee, USA 2013

A team of 15 students participated in the SAE BAJA Tennessee competition held at Tennessee, USA on April 18th – 21st, 2013. Here teams have to design, build and race off-road vehicles that can withstand the harshest elements of rough terrain. There are multiple dynamic events like hill climb where the vehicle must climb a 40 degree inclined hill, sled pull is where the vehicle has to pull a heavy load and the distance up to which the vehicle can pull the loads decides the vehicles score, maneuverability is where the vehicle agility is tested with a track consisting of tight hairpin bends, chicanes, over 4 feet climbs and multiple snake cones, suspension event is where a lot of cars break down since this course is designed to test the strength of the vehicle where vehicle have to jump almost 2 ft in the air on slippery surfaces, and the final 4 – hour endurance race which takes place in the end where parts of all the above events are included in a final long track which is grueling enough to test a standard 4x4 SUV. Before taking part in any of the dynamic events teams have to pass technical inspection where the each and every imaginable aspect of the vehicle is inspected, here over 90% of the teams are failed in their first attempt, most teams manage to pass in their second or third attempt. BPDC team passed in the second attempt.

Static event include design reports, presentations and evaluations. This is when the teams are judged on ergonomics, functionality, and producibility of their cars; ensuring that the final placement of the team does not rest solely on the vehicle's performance but rather on a combination of static and dynamic events.

Team XA, the first team from Birla Institute of Technology & Science to go for the international SAE Baja competition built their vehicle on the principles of simplicity and ruggedness with the aim being to successfully complete the competition where only 75% of the teams make it to the final race of where about 10 to 20 teams drop out in the first lap itself.

BPDC vehicle had a 10hp single cylinder Briggs & Stratton engine (specified by the competition rules), double wishbone suspension which during computer analysis could survive over 2g of force. Its drive train was a rather simple setup of a CVT followed by a dual chain reduction. Teams have to design vehicle with not just brute torque or rigidity but with also agility and top speed. BPDC vehicle could not complete the final endurance race because due to a problem in the drive train, but whoever saw the vehicle there had only praises for them when they came to know that it was the first attempt. BPDC team would like to thank the following for their immense support and help:
    • Dr.N.K.Millerjothi – Our faculty advisor
    • The Mechanical Faculty of BPDC
